McLaughlin & Nardi’s attorneys have strong ties in the county beyond appearing regularly in Bergen County’s courts. Frank Nardi was born and raised in Bergen County, and attended Don Bosco Prep. Maurice McLaughlin has been on the faculty at Fairleigh Dickinson University since 1999.
The Superior Court of New Jersey in Hackensack handles Bergen County civil trials, major criminal cases, family matters, landlord/tenant cases and small claims. Bergen County occupies the northeastern corner of New Jersey, bounded by Upstate New York to the north, and Manhattan and the Hudson River to the east. Bergen County is New Jersey’s most populous county.
Bergen County was first settled by the Native American Lenape tribe, to which today’s Ramapo Mountain Indians trace their roots. Henry Hudson claimed the area for the Dutch East India Company, naming it New Netherland. Several battles were fought in Bergen County during the Revolution. The county was largely farmland until development began to grow in 1931 with the opening of the George Washington Bridge. From the 1950’s to the 1970’s, the Army stationed Nike missiles in Bergen County to protect New York.
Bergen County is richly diverse. It ranges from urban areas in Hackensack, to the suburbs of Saddle River, Alpine and Closter, to the Meadowlands towns of Moonachie, East Rutherford and Carlstadt, to the highlands of Oakland and Mahwah. It has farmland, heavy industry, fortune 500 companies and professional sports teams. It’s real estate is among the most valuable in the United States. It is ethnically diverse as well, and indeed has one of the largest Asian-American communities in the nation, including especially Indian and Korean-American communities; Bergen County has the largest Korean community of any county in the nation. Bergen County is home to many thousands of immigrants striving for a better life. It is home to a large community of executives and entrepreneurs who have found that better life.
Bergen County has many excellent educational institutions, including Fairleigh Dickinson University, Felician College, Ramapo College, Saint Peter’s College’s Englewood Cliffs campus, Berkley College, Dover Business College, Bergen County Community College, Bergen Catholic High School, Don Bosco Prep and Bergen County Academies.
Bergen County has its own boards and commissions, such as the Bergen County Tax Board, which hears Bergen County property tax appeals. Each town also has its own boards and commissions, such as the Lodi Board of Education which handles Lodi school issues, and the Paramus Zoning Board which handles Paramus land use issues.
