Public Service
The law is where government meets the people. The law sets up a system which provides the basis for people to guide their lives and livelihoods and manage their affairs. It offers a means of redress for those who have been wronged by the government or their fellow man. It provides a means of protection for the weak from the mighty which the government will enforce.
We at McLaughlin & Nardi, LLC believe that our position and training as attorneys puts us in a unique position to help people in their efforts to obtain legal help. Unfortunately, however, in our society not everyone has the financial means to secure competent legal counsel when they need legal relief. Therefore, we believe that the legal profession has an ethical obligation to assist people with limited access to legal services.
Our lawyers and staff take pride in their efforts to improve the community and help people through the law. Our attorneys have spent many hours providing pro bono services to those of limited means, as well as religious and charitable organizations; served in various professional and public service organizations; and served in government at the local, state and federal levels, in uniform and as civilians.
For example, our lawyers perform pro bono publico legal services through Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, Northeast Legal Services of New Jersey, Newark Reentry Legal Services (ReLeSe) and the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Military Legal Assistance Program. We have also performed pro bono legal services at the behest of local religious institutions, including St. Anthony of Padua Episcopal Church in Hackensack. We handle pro bono expungments, bankruptcies, landlord-tenant matters, and legal issues for veterans. We have appeared in New Jersey’s state and federal courts throughout Northern New Jersey on pro bono public service assignments, including the United States Bankruptcy Court in Newark, and the Superior Court of New Jersey in Passaic County in Paterson, in Essex County in Newark, and in Bergen County in Hackensack.
Our attorneys are involved in professional organizations, including serving in various sections and committees of the New Jersey State Bar Association, the Passaic County Bar Association, and the American Inns of Court. Maurice W. McLaughlin, for example, is currently a member and was for four years the chair person of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Pro Bono and is leader of his sons’ Cub Scout troop.
Our attorneys are also actively involved as leaders, coaches and volunteers for a wide range of civic organizations, including churches, local chambers of commerce, local sports leagues, scouts, and veterans organizations. We have sponsored local youth sports teams. Frank Nardi, for example, is the past president of the Accounting Financial and Tax Professional Society of New Jersey and coaches youth sports teams in his Somerset County hometown.
In short, we are committed to using the law to advance the public good.
Our offices are located in Totowa, in Passaic County, New Jersey. We can be contacted by telephone at (973) 890-0004 or email.
