Bellville, a township of 35,926 people, sits in northeastern Essex County on the western bank of the Passaic River. Bellville derives from the French belle ville, meaning literally “beautiful town.” Belleville was formed in 1839. More than one in ten Bellville residents served in World War II, and Bellville had sixty plants helping the war effort. Clara Maass Memorial Hospital is located in Bellville atop “Nanny Goat Hill” overlooking Branch Brook Park. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons began their career in Belleville. Other notable residents at one time or another include singer Connie Francis, Pulitzer prize winning author Russell Baker, singer Sarah Vaughan, actor Joe Pesci, and major league catcher Moe Berg who was also a spy for the CIA predecessor Office of Strategic Services during World War II (Casey Stengel called Berg “the strangest man ever to play baseball”).
