Courts Which Hear Flemington, New Jersey Legal Matters
Flemington’s Municipal Court hears matters ranging from traffic offenses, minor and criminal matters, to local ordinance violations. Civil cases, Flemington expungements, and landlord/tenant disputes are heard by the Superior Court of New Jersey, in Hunterdon County. First level appeals from the trial divisions are heard by the Superior Court’s Appellate Division. The United States District Court in hears Flemington federal cases, and some state cases which are removed to federal court for various reasons. The United States Bankruptcy Court handles Flemington’s bankruptcy matters. Flemington zoning matters and variances are heard by the Flemington Zoning Board of Adjustment. Flemington land use planning and subdivision matters are handles by the Flemington Planning Board of Adjustment.
About Flemington, New Jersey
Historic Flemington has maintained its country atmosphere, despite all that it holds. The seat of Hunterdon County, Flemington is located in the center of Raritan Township. Flemington was chosen to be the Hunterdon County Seat in 1785. Flemington has a rich history that goes back to the 1700’s. The Courthouse of Flemington burned down in 1826 but Flemington remained the County Seat. The rebuilt Courthouse is on what is now known as Main Street. Sixty-five percent of the Borough is included on the New Jersey State Resister of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places. The County Fair has been held in Flemington sine the 1800’s; its main purpose is to promote competition between the farmers, stock raisers, and machinery manufacturers of the Borough. Between its seven schools, Flemington County holds a very excellent school district and Board of Education.
The most widely publicized case of the early 20th century was heard in the Hunterdon County Court House in Flemington, New Jersey. The Lindbergh Kidnapping was a crime that shook up the country. Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr was the son of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. He was a 20 month old baby that was put to bed and suddenly abducted from his room on March 1st, 1932. A ransom note was left behind and about two weeks later the baby’s body was found a short distance away from the home. About two years after one of the longest investigations of the time, Bruno Hauptmann was arrested and charged with the crime. After being found in New York, Hauptmann was brought to New Jersey on October 19, 1934. The trial soon became a sensation and had reporters swarming Flemington and booking every hotel room available. Hauptmann was charged with extortion and murder and ultimately convicted of the crimes and sentenced to death. He was electrocuted on April 3, 1936, about four years after the famous kidnapping.
