Morris County, New Jersey

Morris County is located in northern New Jersey. With a population of nearly half-million, it is the seventh largest county in New Jersey and, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, it is the ninth wealthiest county in the United States and the highest ranked in New Jersey.

Morris County’s roots stretch back to the Revolutionary War when it was known as “The Military Capital of the American Revolution.” It was created on March 15, 1738 and is named after Colonel Lewis Morris, who was then the Governor of the Province of New Jersey. It is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Freeholders are elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis.

Morris County is rich in history with many notable landmarks, including George Washington’s encampment at the Morristown National Historic Park (The Ford Mansion, Jockey Hallow, New Jersey Brigade/Cross Estate Gardens, and Fort Nonesense), Cooper Mill, and the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum. Benedict Arnold was court-martialed at Dickerson’s Tavern on Spring Street in Morristown on charges relating to profiteering from military supplies.

Morris County College is located in Randolph and a County Vocational Technical School is in Denville.
