About Wayne
Wayne, New Jersey is located in central Passaic County. Wayne is a township, formed in 1847. When seen by Dutch surveyor Arent Schuyler, the first European known to visit, what is now Wayne was inhabited by a large population of the Native American Leni Lenape tribe, who had widespread and fertile agriculture production. Wayne remained an agricultural community through the early Twentieth Century. In the years before World War II, Wayne was a lakeside resort community. After the War, however it transitioned to a year round suburb.
Wayne was transited by the Morris Canal, and still is by the Passaic River. The Wayne Board of Education runs an excellent kindergarten through high school public school system. Wayne also has many excellent private schools, including Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Academy, Passaic County Technical Institute, and DePaul Catholic High School. Wayne is home to William Paterson University.
Wayne’s Municipal Court handles minor criminal offenses, traffic offenses and local ordinance violations occurring in Wayne. New Jersey’s Superior Court in Paterson handles civil cases, landlord/tenant disputes and expungements. Federal cases are heard in the United States District Court in Newark, New Jersey. Bankruptcies for Wayne residents and busineses are heard in the United States Bankruptcy Court, also in Newark. Zoning, variances and land use matters are handled by the Wayne Zoning and Planning Boards.
